Nail Scandi Style

Scandinavian homes are nestled among rich landscapes of lakes, mountains, rivers and forests, with their connection to the natural environment reflected in their interior style. As a result, interiors are focused on clean colour palettes and maximising the natural light, in an effort to combat the gloominess of the early darkness that sets in, particularly during the winter months.

If you love the Scandi look, follow our recommendations to turn your home into a minimalist haven.

Colour

First and foremost, the ambiance of a Scandinavian interior relies on a fairly muted colour palette.

White walls, cool greys and small pops of colour, like ochre or navy, will exude the pale and serene colour scheme that has become the trademark of Scandinavian design. This works in contrast with the region’s dark winters. Highlight lighter walls and fabrics with references to natural elements, such as simple timber furniture, wooden beams and leather accessories, to bring the outside in.

Layer up

Cold weather (and by cold we mean frequently below freezing!) is the Scandinavian standard, so cosy interiors are an absolute must.

Deflect the cold and achieve a true Scandi interior feel by combining various textures, throwing together natural materials like linen, cotton and wool, sitting patterned cable-knit cushions on plainer couches and topping timber floors with cowhide rugs.

Flooring

Timber flooring is the foundation of creating a warm space and therefore tends to be prevalent in Scandinavian design.

Light varieties are the go to, helping to accentuate pale walls and accessories to open up the space. Try Stockmans Ridge Timber in Blackbutt or Provincial Lane timber in Macadamia for a clean and versatile base.

Functionality

The concept of easy living is at the root of all Scandi design. Open plan layouts allow each room to flow seamlessly into the next, while sparse, but carefully thought out, furnishings bring a zen vibe to the space.

Nail pared back styling by steering clear of too many or very heavy accessories that dominate the room and by being ultra-conscious of even a little bit of clutter building up.
