The Carpet Institute of Australia have developed labelling system that rates carpets according to their durability and appearance retention.

Carpet Styles
Different carpet styles form a variety of different patterns and textures.
Berber
Refers to the flecks of colour against a pale background. Usually made in loop style from thick yarns. Also available in other styles such as shag and friezes.
Cut Plush Pile
A cut yarn that twists together creating a soft feel underfoot
Cut Twist Pile
A cut high twisted yarn lays in different directions creating a firmer, more textured appearance.
Frieze
Cut yarn that lays in different directions creating a deep texture and luxurious feel
Level Cut Loop Pile
A combination of level loop and cut pile that has the unique ability to create a range of distinctive patterns with a smooth finish and soft feel
Loop Pile
Uncut Yarn made into loops to create a stronger, more wear resistance pile
Shag Pile
A combination of yarns and different thicknesses creates a highly textured appearance in a variety of patterns and styles
Sisal
A type of loop pile that uses textured loops in straight rows. Varying the height of the loops creates a variety of patterns.
Textured Cut Loop Pile
A combination of cut and loop in varying heights creates a textured appearance that results in variety of patterns.
Textured Loop Pile
Uncut Yarn made into loops of varied lengths to create a strong, wear resistance and textured finish.
Carpet Fibres
There are a wide variety of fibres used in carpet manufacturing, each of them delivering a different look, feel and lustre to suit individual needs.
Blends
There are a number of blended fibres used in carpet production. These blends vary from 50/50 wool/nylon or polypropylene to 80% wool/20% nylon and variations in between
Nylon
A leading carpet fibre used in carpet production internationally that has an outstanding ability to resist abrasive wear, loss of fibre due to traffic and resilience in receiving against pile crushing
OlefinOlefin fiber is a synthetic fiber made from a polyolefin, such as polypropylene or polyethylene. It is a strong fibre, with good colorfastness and comfort, stain, mildew, abrasion and sunlight resistance.
Patterned HiLo Loop Pile
Uncut yarn is made using loops of various heights, giving a textured finish to the surface of the carpet with an exceptionally durable result.
Polyester
A versatile carpet fibre that is exceptionally soft, ideal for thick cut pile styles. Naturally stain and fade resistant with excellent colour clarity and abrasion resistance.
Polypropylene
This fibre type uses the solution dyed process with excellent soil and stain resistance and added colour fastness benefits. It doesn't have the same resilience as nylon but when used in loop pile it offers exceptional wear and value for money
Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN)
A Nylon carpet fibre that utilises a unique process where colour is added to the fibre when it is made, unlike many other fibre types. This results in an extremely colourfast and fade resistant fibre.
Triexta
A high end, innovative carpet fibre that is allergy friendly, durable and incredibly soft. Built in stain resistance doesn't wear off and has superb resistance to mold and mildew.
Wool
A traditional carpet fibre that has a good natural fire resistance and soil and stain resistance. A resilient, durable solution.
