Creating a Luxurious Family Upstairs Retreat

Provide some insight into the space that you renovated; what was it like prior to the makeover?

A: George and I recently renovated the upstairs of our home, which was in desperate need of new flooring! Prior to the makeover, the floors were covered in a cheap, frumpy, brown carpet. As you can imagine, it was quite unsightly and didn’t suit the style of the rest of the home. We purchased the house knowing this would be one of the first things on our list to replace!

Tell us about the style of the renovation; what inspired the look?

A: We wanted the final style of the renovation upstairs to match the rest of the home, which has quite a modern and contemporary look and feel. Carpet Court’s range of loop pile carpets helped us achieve this look, making the space feel stylish and luxe. We used this style of carpet in our house on The Block and loved it so much that we were inspired to use it again.

What mood or feel did you want to create in this space? How does it tie into the rest of your home?

A: We wanted our upstairs retreat to feel warm, cosy, and inviting, but still stylish and on-trend. It needed to be suitable for comfortable, family living while also having a sense of luxury so that it is suitable for any guests that we have. The right carpet can instantly warm up a space, which is why we opted for Carpet Court’s beautiful Expanse range in ‘Alder’. The pile of this carpet made our home feel contemporary, while the warm grey colourway helped tie it in perfectly with the rest of the home.

How did you find the balance of creating a family-friendly space that still had a luxurious feel to it?

A: Pile carpets make finding the balance between practicality and luxury easy. This style of carpet is beautifully soft underfoot and is great at repelling spills, making it perfect for a busy family like ours where accidents happen all too often! At the same time, the way that the fibres are strung together creates warmth, texture, and provided a sense of luxury in all our spaces.

Tell us about the carpet used in the space; what impact did it have on creating the look/feel that you were after? What about the colourways?

A: The carpet that we installed was part of Carpet Court’s Expanse range in the ‘Alder’ colourway. Made from ECONYL® regenerated nylon – a 100% recycled yarn made from nylon waste such as old carpets, fabric scraps and fishing nets - this carpet is not only extremely soft underfoot, but also an eco-friendly option.

This carpet made a dramatic impact on our upstairs retreat, instantly lifting the look and feel of our home in just a day. The atmosphere of our upstairs area feels elevated all because of this simple change in flooring. The ‘Alder’ colourway is a beautiful warm grey and has hints of white and black throughout, helping to give the space added texture.

What are your top three tips for undertaking a renovation?

A:

  1. Budget - know how much you can spend and try your best to not exceed it.
  2. Spend your money in the right places – it’s always better to invest in elements such as your flooring, cabinetry, and finishes, and avoid blowing your budget on furniture.
  3. Inspiration – Instagram and Pinterest are great resources for inspiration, as well as the latest trends and tips for when building or renovating a space.
