Modern Coastal Styling Tips
Modern Coastal living is the fresh new incarnation of the traditional beach house style, sometimes known as ‘Hampton’s Style’. We’ve said farewell to the oversized sea-shells, smartly tailored furnishings and glossy timbers, and in their place is a chic, understated, and very relaxed ode to life by the ocean.
The whole concept behind this new coastal style is that of carefree, sun-drenched days, where the decorating rules are a lot less strict, inviting us to kick off our sandy shoes at the door and embrace a more easy-going and laid-back existence. Modern coastal furniture should be sturdy, yet relaxed – think big slouchy linen sofas, timber furniture, and loads of texture you’re keen on. In embracing this gorgeous look, here are my top five styling tips to help you get started.
1. MODERN COASTAL COLOUR PALETTE
The new modern coastal colour palette bears many similarities to more traditional beachside schemes which feature loads of white and pale ocean blues. However, there are a few important additions to the scheme, such as warm neutral tones like sand and beige which help create the soothing, beachside vibe. Also, the occasional hint of black can make a space feel instantly more contemporary.
2. THE ALL-IMPORTANT ADDITION OF TEXTURE
Tactility plays a huge role in styling a modern coastal home. What we touch with the skin on our fingertips as well as our feet will all contribute to the wonderfully sensory feelings of relaxation and contentment. Fabrics such as raw linen, hessian, ticking and thick cotton, are perfect for upholstery and cushions. Timber furniture should be a little rough-hewn, with its natural features and knots on display - rather than being highly lacquered or polished. Soft flooring options should feel deliciously robust under those summer bare feet. Remember that the eye takes in texture as well, so a generous mix of tactile pieces will create a very satisfying vista from wherever you are choosing to relax.
3. MODERN COASTAL FLOORING
Flooring is arguably the greatest element that may make or break your modern coastal scene. The current look is all about pale timbers, such as natural oak, which work terrifically well with white or off-white walls and furniture, sea blues, and all neutral paint tones. This light oak tone keeps the spaces feeling bright, informal and relaxed and there is a perfect one for your coastal styling, from engineered timber through to vinyl and laminates, with my favourites being:
Timber: Verity engineered oak in Limed Oak
Hybrid: Ashbury Oak in Rottnest Oak
Laminate: Florence Plus in treated Matt Oak
Vinyl: Southern Lights in Beachside Oak
4. A SOFTER SIDE – HOW TO STYLE CARPET AND RUGS FOR THE MODERN COASTAL LOOK
We’ve talked about the importance of texture, and the most effective way to add a large scale hit of such is with either carpet or rugs. Chunky, knotted, twist or thick pile carpets are wonderful in coastal homes.
My best picks for a textured look are:
Focus, in Trance, which is made of sustainable ECONYL® Fibres.
Moroccan Berber in Mohair, which is created from premium solution dyed nylon fibre.
Alpine Retreat in Falls Creek, which is not a name you’d expect to hear by the beach but trust me this 100% pure wool carpet is the ultimate in coastal luxury.
5. MODERN COASTAL WINDOW TREATMENTS
I firmly believe that window furnishings – no matter what style of home you have - are like the icing on your home’s cake. Sure, views are great, but even the best views can be improved with the right window treatment. Traditionally, Plantation Shutters have been incredibly popular for coastal homes, and they continue to be. Blinds (and motorised roller blinds) are an incredible way to control light - as well as heat as their thermal qualities keep it inside and out as required. Curtains are the ideal way to add a lovely extra layer of texture to a space, and sheer curtains in particular can really add to that light, bright sunshiny feel that life by the coast is famous for.
The best news is that you don’t have to actually live by the coast to embrace and enjoy the Modern Coastal style – it’s just as at home in the country, the burbs, and even in the city.
