Selecting the Right Flooring for your Home

Provide some insight into the products (flooring) that you selected; what are their key benefits and features? (e.g. soft underfoot, durable, eco-friendly qualities, etc.).

A: We really love carpet in bedrooms; it was a definite must for our Lake House Build. After careful consideration, we went with Expanse in Alder from the ECONYL® regenerated nylon range. We love how soft its underfoot is and the fact that it is eco-friendly was a bonus. We used Expressive in American Oak from the Hybrid range throughout the rest of the house. This flooring has a strong resemblance to real timber but also offers the invaluable advantages of being durable and scratch resistant. Additionally, the ease of cleaning further enhances our appreciation for this flooring selection.

Why did you select Expressive in American Oak from the Hybrid range as the flooring for your dining and kitchen area?

A: We intend to eventually turn our Lake House Build into an Airbnb, so using a product that met our aesthetic preferences and also provided exceptional features and benefits was important to us. We love the Expressive in American Oak from the Hybrid range, which combines the elegant timber look and the practical advantages of being durable and scratch-resistant.

When it came to flooring, what was your brief? Were there any particular requirements or lifestyle factors that you needed to consider in the selection product?

A: We had a clear brief in mind when it came to our design. Embracing the Modern Coastal aesthetic, we aimed to infuse warmth throughout our space by incorporating timber elements. Harmonising our flooring selection with the overall design was integral. The Expressive in American Oak effortlessly merges with all our other timber features, creating a cohesive and exceptional design scheme that we truly love.

What are the key considerations when selecting flooring for a high-traffic area like the kitchen, and how can you strike the right balance between durability and style?

A: Whilst we recognise the crucial role that design plays when selecting a product, our top priority was to find a floor that could withstand the demands of daily use. Durability became key, along with the essentials like water resistance and scratch resistance. In this regard, Expressive Hybrid stood out as the clear winner, effortlessly ticking all the boxes. Not only does it possess the desired functionality, but it also exudes a visually appealing charm that aligns seamlessly with our design brief.

How did you make an informed decision on your flooring selection? Did you review samples to see what colours and textures would and wouldn’t work in your home? Did you seek advice from an expert at Carpet Court?

A: To make an informed decision, we visited our local Carpet Court to compare different carpet and hard flooring samples and textures. The Carpet Court team was great in guiding us through all the different products, allowing us to explore flooring combinations, helping us envisage how they would complement our home. There was such a great range, we were able to choose everything we needed very easily. We also took home some samples before finalising our order to ensure that we made the right decision.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when selecting flooring for a kitchen and dining room renovation, and how can you ensure that you make the right selection for your specific needs and preferences?

A: Durability is our top priority when it comes to flooring. A common mistake is selecting a product based on design alone which we have done in the past, leaving us disappointed. Opting for a low-maintenance product is another crucial factor, especially if you have a larger house. We try to stay away from anything that has too many grooves where dirt is going to get trapped into, making cleaning more challenging.

What are your top three tips for selecting the right flooring for your home?

A: Here are our top three tips to guide you in selecting flooring for your home:

  • Budget! Know what your budget is and stick to it.
  • Durability, is this product going to last? Will it withstand the demands of furniture being moved around and little puppy toenails when they are running through the house?
  • And lastly, design. Flooring can change the total look of a space so making sure it is for the better is very important, choose a product that meets your design brief and is going to complement all the other features in your home.

Did you consider any current interior / flooring “trends” when selecting your flooring? If so, please explain the inspiration behind your selections.

A: We thought about using a herringbone pattern which is quite popular when laying flooring in living spaces but decided to go against the trend as the Expressive range fit our overall requirements. While our initial preference for the bedrooms leaned towards a soft plush carpet, we ultimately opted for Expanse range. The carpet still provided a delightfully soft underfoot and aligned more seamlessly with our Modern Coastal design brief.

How long did the flooring process take with Carpet Court? Did you have to undertake any preparation before the install of each?

A: The whole process with our local Carpet Court was amazing. As we were living in the house during the renovation, the installation was completed in two stages. We emptied the bedrooms and stored furniture in the living spaces while the carpet was being installed. Once the bedrooms were complete, the team returned to install the flooring in the kitchen and living spaces. The installation process only took three days for the whole house, which was great as we were working to a very tight schedule.

What advice would you give to someone undertaking a renovation when it comes to upgrading your flooring?

A: Our biggest piece of advice when replacing flooring during a renovation is to make sure you do it towards the end, after tasks like painting have been completed. This approach will help protect your new flooring from any potential mess or damage. The last thing you also want is trades walking in and out on your new flooring. As much as you can cover it up, you will be surprised how much mud and mess makes it inside.
