Entertaining in Autumn

Autumn Entertaining

Darren Palmer has a broad portfolio, having studied fine art & graphic design, originally working in advertising and owning his own graphic design company. After succumbing to his true passion, Darren now operates his own interior design studio and has been a judge on numerous seasons of The Block.

Sadly the warmer months are behind us so we need to start thinking about how we can create a cosier setting to keep entertaining. It might mean a change of scenery and a different kind of use of your outdoor spaces to protect from the elements.

Before you move completely indoors you should be sure you make the most of the autumn months. Because the nights are cool but not freezing cold, the temperature is perfect to nestle outside around a fire. The mozzies are gone, the air is crisp and those marshmallows are waiting to be melted and enjoyed together.

Stock up on throws

Whether outside or in, rather than cranking up the heater just yet, layer up your sofas and beds with soft furnishings. These offer a few extra layers of warmth, but also visual softness.

An extra blanket across the foot of your bed can provide a lovely colour or texture contrast to your summer bedroom look. A throw on your couch can provide warmth when you need it, but also gives you a great visual break to the large masses that couches can be. A nice soft, cascading throw can be just the ticket for your autumnal styling.

Bring your dinner party indoors

With lovely layering and cosiness happening inside, it’s a perfect opportunity to bring your dinner parties indoors too. Cut some winter foliage from your garden and dress your table with rich brasses or golds. Layer napkins on linen table cloths and really dial up the lush factor when dressing your dinner table for guests. Candles too fit perfectly into autumn evenings.

Whilst summer calls for fresh, light styling, as opposed to winter which is often heavy and comforting, autumn dining can be a combination of both. Most of all focus your creative energy this autumn on softness and comfort. Gather your loved ones close and embrace the perfect balance that autumn brings.
