Darren Palmer has a broad portfolio, having studied fine art & graphic design, originally working in advertising and owning his own graphic design company. After succumbing to his true passion, Darren now operates his own interior design studio and has been a judge on numerous seasons of The Block.

Warm breezes, cold drinks, keeping the heat out and letting the sunshine in personifies what summer is all about. Below are a few style tips to ready your home for the season.

Rugs are a great place to start when transitioning between seasons. While a shag rug provides warmth and comfort for your feet in the cooler months, short cut pile rugs, such as Carpet Court’s Evoke or Urban ranges, are the perfect base for your living, dining and bedrooms for the warmer months.

Carpet Court’s Elevate DIY wall or ceiling panelling in the white ‘Hamptons’ profile can replicate the feeling of a relaxed beach shack without any of the hassles of cutting and installing large panels. The timber look has a softening and cooling effect, both visually and metaphorically.

Linen and cotton are ubiquitous with summer style, with greys and whites being go-to favourites. Consider white cotton couch slip covers that can easily be removed, bleached and laundered to maintain freshness.

Window coverings can also be transformative – Plantation shutters not only suit summer styling but are fantastic with light control, heat moderation and privacy. Carpet Court’s plantation shutters are in my own beach house, which are timeless and can work with any décor style.

Lighting is an important part of any interior scheme and can inject a summery pop of colour and interest into the home. Lights Lights Lights has a terrazzo range called O2 featuring blue, red, grey and black terrazzo for that dash of targeted interest.

It is also the perfect time to commence readying your outdoor area for summer entertaining. My current range of Darren Palmer wire mesh Ball Lanterns, exclusive to Myer, in two sizes, look perfect paired together and will help create a moody ambiance. My Avanya punch bowl and cocktail shaker set, finished in gold for maximum luxe appeal is perfect for a summer soiree.

BBQs are another outdoor drawcard. Whilst there’s many options from built in BBQs to full outdoor kitchens, for a little bit of designer cool check out Webber’s Summit 24” Charcoal grill. It’s freestanding and compact yet won’t compromise on style.

The water is warmer, just like the weather so think about how you can multi-purpose your beach gear as interesting décor. Hang Turkish beach towels on an entrance wall, alongside a straw hat and a canvas beach bag, which screams summer.
