The material used for natural rugs

Rugs are commonly described by the fibre they are constructed from, such as wool, synthetic or natural. While wool is also a natural fibre, a wool rug is distinctly classified as such. The ‘synthetic’ label covers a range of man-made fibres and blends such as nylon, acrylic or polypropylene. But when referring to a rug as ‘natural’, it generally means it has been made from renewable natural plant sources like cotton, jute, and sisal rugs.

At Carpet Court, our natural rug collection includes jute and cotton rugs as well as rugs made from a combination of natural fibres. Whether you choose a vibrant and bold coloured rug or a subtle earthy tone natural rug, our natural rugs are often hand-woven, or made from a flat weave construction, and typically created by local artisans in countries like India or Pakistan. Our natural rug collection boasts an assortment of designs displaying raw, rugged, and natural beauty textured fibres in bold and neutral colours.

Natural fibres to look out for, popular jute rugs, wool blends and more

Floor rugs can bring texture and visual interest to any room in your home. Natural fibre floor rugs are made from fibres that occur naturally in plants. Natural fibres to look out for when shopping for a floor rug include jute, cotton, sisal, bamboo and hemp. Although wool is a natural fibre, it is generally classified on its own.

  • Jute: A jute rug is made from the natural fibre jute plant found in Asia. Jute is popular because it is versatile and durable. Carpet Court’s range of jute natural fibre floor rugs includes the Bali range which is flat woven, eco-friendly and made in India. Available in natural tone with a black diamond design this rug is great for Modern, Coastal and Boho spaces!
  • Wool blend: Floor rugs can also be constructed from a blend of wool and other natural fibres. The Stockholm Aztec range, available at Carpet Court, features 83% wool,11% cotton and 6% polyester, constructed with a tight float-weave for improved longevity and wear. The Lisbon range is an extremely versatile rug, soft underfoot and combines 50% wool and 50% jute in its construction. If you’re looking for a fresh-look white rug, you can opt for a more practical neutral foundational layer from the Travertine range — a luxurious viscose/wool rug range to elevate any space in your home.

Eco-friendly rugs

Natural fibre floor rugs are a good choice as a sustainable and eco-friendly addition to your home. Derived from plants, natural fibre floor rugs include cotton, sisal, jute, seagrass, coir and hemp, as well as blends with wool. But to ensure your natural fibre rug is 100% eco-friendly, check the backing and underlay pad’s construction.

Finding the best style for your space

Natural fibre floor rugs bring a sense of easy elegance to any interior space. When choosing for your home, placement is important to consider what natural fibre floor rug will work best.

High traffic areas, like the living room and entrance area, require a highly durable and stain-resistant floor rug. Bedrooms and playrooms (where kids are more on the floor) would need a softer feel natural fibre floor rug.

Natural jute rugs are better suited to low to medium traffic areas because jute is a softer natural fibre. Sisal is a more hard-wearing fibre and well suited to high traffic areas, although they’re harder underfoot and requires more effort to remove stains. Hemp is another sustainable natural fibre, incredibly strong and mildew resistant but may shed.

Natural fibre rugs are great for high traffic areas

It is important to consider the specific fibre and rug material in deciding if a natural fibre rug is suitable for a high traffic area in your home.

Eco-friendly natural floor rugs such as recyclable jute have many benefits and are generally quite affordable. The advantages of jute include good insulation and antistatic properties, and our Atrium Jute rugs are reversible which gives them an extra lease of life. However, jute does not like to get wet, so if there is a risk of absorbing moisture in a high traffic area then a jute rug is not necessarily the best choice.

Made from 100% sustainable and biodegradable rough textured fibres, hardwearing sisal rugs can handle high traffic areas at home. However, like eco-friendly jute, sisal rugs will retain water and potentially discolour, so that should be taken into consideration.

Organic rugs made from cotton are soft and strong and very easy to clean which makes them ideal for high traffic areas. Cotton floor rugs are machine washable, so if high traffic brings high soiling — like a runner rug in an entrance hall — you can simply throw your cotton rug in the washing machine.

Natural colour rugs available

Whether you’re looking for a neutral rug or a bolder option, Carpet Court’s wide range of natural fibre rugs offers many choices in colour and design. As a floor covering, natural fibre rugs can complement any interior space, and also make a statement. Choose from black jute rugs to cherry red or shades of grey rugs. Or consider geometric patterns, chevrons or bold stripes — a natural fibre rug can liven up or complement any room in your home. For a minimalist Scandi look, choose a neutral colour rug as the essential foundation to enhance clean-line furniture and art.

Easy to maintain and clean

Vacuuming both sides of natural fibre rugs regularly will keep them clean and pick up any stray fibres they might shed. If spills or stains occur, you should closely follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning your natural floor rug to ensure you don’t cause any damage. Each natural fibre is different. For example, jute rugs and sisal rugs can change colour if they get wet whereas cotton rugs are machine washable. Because jute and sisal rugs don’t love water, these natural fibre rugs aren’t suitable as outdoor rugs.
