Add a beautifully-crafted, luxurious traditional rug to enhance any interior space

What are traditional rugs?

Traditional rugs (also known as Persian or Oriental rugs) are rugs that have intricate, multicolour detailed designs, feature dark bold colours like navy blue, and are generally hand-knotted, sometimes taking months to complete.

Here at Carpet Court, we have a range of designs, fabrics, and colours available to bring warmth, add colour, and layer texture within a home. Our range of traditional rugs has been created by skilled craftsman from countries like Turkey, Belgium, India and China. These beautiful rugs bring a timeless sense of culture from faraway places, providing statement pieces of interest, warmth and original style.

The beauty of a traditional rug is borne out of the talented work of skilled artisans. Rewind hundreds of years to vibrant medieval cities bustling with thriving marketplaces beneath sapphire skies and a scorching sun. This sets the scene to create beautiful rugs with natural textiles, handcrafted in traditional patterns, medallion designs and earthy colours.

Creating a vintage feel within your home

Antique, vintage, retro… these are all styles that make it feel as though plenty of time has gone by. But even if an interior décor item isn’t old (true vintage), it can have an old-style retro feel. Many interior styles mix up modern and retro pieces to layer texture and add interest to a space. If you’re looking to create a vintage feel to your home décor, a retro or vintage rug can define an interior space or area as a foundational layer. Some of our vintage-style rugs include the Evoke and Kendra ranges. Conversely, a contemporary rug — from a neutral beige rug or navy rug to a vibrant rust rug or red rug — can be a blank canvas foundational layer for vibrant and eclectic vintage furniture and wall art.

How to find the right rug size for your room

The starting point in finding the right rug size for your room is to measure your room.

For living rooms, choose a rug that extends under sofas and furniture, including side tables and coffee tables. For a dining room, a large area rug that doesn’t hook under dining chairs is essential when defining the dining space (especially in open-plan homes). Let your dining area rug extend under the buffet table, or at least include it. For bedrooms, choose a rug that can fit neatly close to the side of the bed to occupy all of the open space for a warm and comfortable wake-up welcome. For kids’ rugs, whether for bedrooms or a playroom, consider durability and stain resistance. Opt for darker shade rugs like navy blue or black rugs, or a busy floral rug design rather than a lighter beige rug which will be harder to hide scuffs and marks. For maximum impact, a rug can extend the full size of any room and make a tasteful impact. For entrance halls, think about choosing a round rug to invite guests in. And for passages and narrow hallways, a narrow runner softens footsteps and adds warmth.

Choosing the right design and style to suit your space

A floor rug can either be a statement piece to build your décor around, or a complementary piece to enhance other eye-catching pieces in the room.

Our traditional rugs can do either. A rich multi-colour rug style with patterns or a medallion rug design can create interest in an otherwise neutral space. Alternatively, you can choose a rug that is understated and doesn’t compete with other bolder pieces of furniture or wall art.

When choosing the colour palette or design for a rug, you’ll need to consider your home environment to determine which type of fibre is best. In a room that receives a lot of direct sunlight, synthetic fibre can offer excellent fade-resistant properties. In active family homes, polypropylene (which is a hardwearing, easy-care textile) can withstand the rigours of family life. In a formal setting, pure wool rugs offer a luxurious feel along with excellent insulating properties. There are also outdoor rugs specifically manufactured to handle an outdoor space, crafted to last and look beautiful.

Take all factors into account when choosing the best rug for your home. If in doubt, speak to one of our Carpet Court experts.

The difference between Persian rugs and Oriental rugs

Understanding the ins and outs and origins of rugs can be a bit confusing. When shopping for rugs, it’s common to ask questions about the differences between various rugs and a rug’s origin. In general, Oriental rugs are carpets from Turkey, Iran, and countries in Asia including India, China, Russia, Pakistan and Tibet. They are hand knotted and woven, and generally made from wool (but can also be made from silk and bamboo). Although also falling under the same blanket cover, Persian rugs are specifically made in Iran – the craft of hand-weaving rugs was invented in Iran (previously known as Persia). There are also rich-in-tradition heirloom Afghan rugs, which are from Afghanistan.

Complementing any room in your space

Traditional rugs are a popular choice to complement any room. More ornate ones are widely chosen to bring a rich texture and a sense of history to any interior space – often placed in dining rooms and living spaces, as well as entrance halls and hallways. If you’re looking to bring texture into the home and define your space with bold interior design, you could create that wow factor with a beautiful runner rug.
