Tess and Luke's Home Renovation
How did your project start?
A: Our reno project started with a spare block, overgrown with trees, a hidden gem that had so much soul and meaning underneath it all. We were both so attached to everything on this block because it belonged to Tess’s grandparents and she has so many childhood memories here. We knew we needed to clear the land but we tried to keep as many trees (including the old kauri pine trees) to keep the land looking established and not too bare. We wanted it to look like home straight away, rather than waiting for the environment to grow around us.
What style or design influences did you consider when designing your home?
A: The style of this build was to keep it simplistic and modern but still to create a HOME. We wanted the bones of this home to do the talking, not the pillows or the furniture. We wanted everyone to walk in and feel comfortable and relaxed but we also wanted it to have the WOW factor. We also wanted to bring the outside in with open plan living, large windows and tall ceilings. Our babies are going to grow up with this being their childhood home and we have taken into consideration every nook and cranny of this house.
What Carpet Court products did you select for your home?
A: We have used the Grand Oak straight lay timber flooring in the colour Mink Grey throughout our entire home (except for 2 bedrooms). In the master bedroom, guest bedroom and walk-in wardrobe, we used Alpine Retreat in the colour Falls Creek.
Tell us more about your timber selection?
A: The Grand Oak engineered timber flooring was a no brainer to use and it really did make our house a “home”. The planks are in a matte finish with individual knots and different tones throughout that blend beautifully together. While the name suggests that they are quite cool, you still have an element of warmth in them which makes these timber planks easy to style with any colour palette in your home. We also loved the dark knots in the planks that complimented some of our black accents in the home like the window frames etc.
Tell us more about why you selected the Alpine Retreat Carpet?
A: The Alpine Retreat carpet was used in the master bedroom and guest bedroom, bringing a luxe vibe to the parents wing and for guests. It is so soft to walk on, keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer and the colours in the Falls Creek include stunning hints of rust that are picked up ever so subtly but still catch your eye. Everyone who walks on it has complimented it. It has made our late nights and early mornings of rocking, walking and shushing a newborn to sleep much more comfortable!
How was your experience working with your local Carpet Court store on this project?
A: Carpet Court ensured that everything ran smoothly from ordering the right materials to delivery. They advised us on the best ways to prep the floor before installing the floorboards as well as allowing for enough material including wastage. We absolutely loved working with Carpet Court on our forever home and will be definitely using them for any future renovations around the corner!
What are your top five tips for selecting flooring for your home?
A: Our top 5 tips for selecting the perfect flooring are:
1. Get as many samples as you can and look at them in different lights and next to your wall colours, window furnishing samples, tiles, cabinetry etc. Do as many flat lays as you can and take photos and compare.
2. Think about your family and lifestyle. For example, we have 2 kids and we know that these floors will get a good workout with toys and falls and things being dropped. We made sure that our flooring was durable, scratches and marks could be fixed or blended in and we also knew that our kids bedroom floors needed to be easy to clean.
3. Think long term. Will this flooring still match any future renovations that may take shape in your home? If you’re forever changing the colour of walls, cabinets etc will the flooring still work with your style? Changing flooring is no easy task but wall colours etc are easy.
4. Go into a store and get professional advice and opinions as well as quotes for installation. Installation varies depending on the type of flooring. For example, we wanted chevron lay throughout the main living area but the cost of install per square meter and how it would transition to straight lay down the hallways wouldn’t be aesthetically pleasing. Ask as many questions as you can prior to purchasing!
5. Is this your forever home or an investment? When choosing flooring for a potential investment property, Carpet Court has a great range of flooring options available. You can achieve the warm, timber floorboard aesthetic using vinyl planks which are more cost effective, feel great underfoot, are hardwearing and easier to replace. Whereas timber flooring is a long term investment.
