Whether your outdoor space is a lush garden or a contemporary courtyard, an outdoor rug can add warmth, luxury and a unique designer element to your entertaining area. If the area runs directly from the living or dining areas, an outdoor rug will create a seamless transition between inside and out.
What is an outdoor rug?
Put simply, outdoor rugs are weather resistant and spill-proof area rugs suitable for use in an outdoor space. They are generally placed on a terrace, deck or balcony, in an alfresco area or beneath a pergola, porch or verandah.
That said, an outdoor rug doesn’t have to confine itself to outdoor areas. Made from resilient and easily-cleaned synthetic polypropylene fibres, outdoor rugs are also ideal in high traffic rooms of the house. Outdoor rugs are perfectly able to blend with the colourful décor in your family rooms featuring indoor/outdoor flow, rumpus rooms, kitchen spaces, children’s bedrooms, hallways and playrooms.
With modern home designs creating seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living spaces, an outdoor rug can help to create a smooth transition between your indoor design theme right through to your outdoor entertaining area.
100% polypropylene rugs are entirely affordable and made from a synthetic fibre which is easy to clean and highly resistant to wear and tear and UV rays, so it won’t fade in the sun.
Are outdoor rugs a good idea?
Polypropylene outdoor rugs are a great idea, bringing multiple benefits to your outdoor spaces!
At Carpet Court you’ll find our outdoor rug collection offers a fantastic selection of colourful and soft-toned neutral rugs in plain or patterned styles. A wide variety of designs are available to suit your taste and your budget while complementing the design features of your outdoor space.
With the strong trend towards alfresco designs incorporating outdoor kitchens, dining spaces and seated lounge areas, a stylish outdoor rug helps to define specific zones within the total area while also providing some warmth and softness to the hard surfaces under foot.
Polypropylene is easily cleaned so an outdoor rug is also an excellent way to protect any surface, particularly your quality pavers, timber decking or expensive aggregate concrete from the inevitable greasy food stains and drink spillages.
An outdoor rug can also cover the existing stains in your outdoor entertaining area, giving it a fresh, modern look.
What materials are outdoor rugs made of?
Our Alfresco outdoor rugs are made from 100% polypropylene, an inexpensive synthetic fibre which is strong, durable and resistant to UV rays.
Polypropylene carpets are often chosen for rental properties because it is a hard-wearing and easily cleaned carpet fibre. These qualities also make it the perfect fibre for use in outdoor rugs as well as in areas of the home where spills and soiling are likely to occur, such as in rumpus rooms which see a lot of indoor/outdoor foot traffic and children’s playrooms.
What sizes of outdoor rugs are available?
Rugs in our delightful Alfresco collection range in size from a neat and tidy 1.6m x 1.1m to a whopping 3.2m x 2.3m. The smaller sizes are perfect for adding a little comfort and design appeal within the area containing your outdoor lounge suite and the largest size can encompass a super-big outdoor dining suite or even cover the majority of your timber deck or concrete flooring space.
What colours and styles do outdoor rugs come in?
While we talk a lot about the durability and resilience of outdoor rugs, they don’t lag behind in the beauty stakes either. While they are not designated as outdoor rugs, the gorgeous polypropylene rugs in our Evoke collection offer a mixture of Turkish-made traditional and modern styles in a beautifully soft and subtle colour palette.
To provide a modern, sustainable look to your outdoor areas, check out the natural appeal of the Suva collection. In simple, predominantly two-tone colour designs, Suva has minimalistic appeal in a simple, flat woven polypropylene fibre with a gel backing.
Polypropylene rugs are the perfect way to continue the theme of your home into your outdoor dining area and even provide a point of interest in your Bali hut setting. Within our synthetic fibre rug collection there is a great selection of colourful and neutral rugs in plain styles or patterned with geometric shapes, tribal features, floral and contemporary designs.
Are outdoor rugs easy to clean and maintain?
A tough, polypropylene rug can be tidied up with your blower vac or indoor vacuum. These durable rugs can be scrubbed with soapy water and hosed clean before being hung out to dry in the sun. Hardwearing polypropylene is also UV stable so it won’t fade in the sun, as well as being highly resistant to mould and mildew so it won’t deteriorate during the cold, wet winter months.
While high quality outdoor rugs are pretty tough, you should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning spills and stains.
