What are the benefits of having a large rug?

Changing the look of your room with one of our large rugs!

What’s your hero piece? Interior design experts recommend that a room should have one focal point - it could be your rug, some artwork, a feature wall, a statement coffee table, or a beautiful bed. A large or extra-large rug is a great hero piece to use as your focal point or as a base for selecting the colours of your furnishings, walls, and floor.

If you’re working with a blank slate, you have free rein for your rug to inspire the rest of your room. Or if you already have furniture in the space, look for a rug that connects to what you have. For example, a rug collection inspired by Moroccan or Persian rugs will include many colours, so you could pick an accent colour/s from it for the rest of the room. This concept applies to an area rug for any room, be it an:

  • outdoor rug - made from durable polypropylene to define your outdoor living setting; or
  • living room rug - to work in harmony with your room or stand out as a statement; or
  • hallway runner rug - to liven it up and lead you to other rooms.

Make your spacious area feel welcoming

Rugs define spaces. Not only do they visually group what is on top of them into a zone they also inject warmth and a welcoming ambience into your space.

In some expansive open-plan living areas, it can be hard to know how to place the furniture. A large rug can be the key ingredient for helping to define your zones, for example, a dining setting at one end of the room, and a lounge area at the other end, coordinated with rugs that complement one another. So, rather than feeling like an overwhelmingly large living space where the furniture becomes lost, you’ve created welcoming sections with a clear purpose.

If your spacious area is truly huge and you’re unable to find a rug large enough, check out our custom rugs which can be made to the size you need.

Where can large rugs be used?

Discover the range of rug styles online

Find the perfect rug for your home without leaving your couch and have it delivered anywhere, Australia-wide. A great way to know which size to buy is to measure and mark out your space with masking tape first. Then you can shop using our filters by style, colour group, shape, size, design, or fibre. You’ll find a rug for every look when you shop online at Carpet Court.

Selecting The Best Rug for your space

Which carpet fibre is best suited to your room and lifestyle? Consider the following factors:

  • Foot traffic - is it a high or low-traffic area?
  • Kids or Pets - will the room be used by kids? Will they be eating in there? Do you have any furry friends to consider? If so, a synthetic fibre rug made from polypropylene, viscose, or acrylic would be a good, hardwearing option.
  • Pile - the pile type plays an important role in the aesthetic of your rug and its suitability for the space. Consider if you want texture in the way of a loop pile, something plush underfoot with a cut pile or something low maintenance for high foot traffic like a flat weave.

Our versatile rug collection comes in a broad range of fibres including natural fibres like wool, cotton, sisal, and jute blends or synthetic fibres like polypropylene, viscose, sisal, and polyester.

Trending colours and designs

Find out what our interior design influencers have to say about current and future trends and design concepts in the Seasonal Trends section of our website. Here you can learn how to use natural fibres and finishes like wool rugs or jute rugs to create a botanical theme, or how on-trend pastel shades of apricot, lilac and mint can be paired with a soft grey rug or a white rug.

Moroccan style brings rich colours of spice into your interiors with terracotta, earthy browns and oranges in mosaic and geometric patterns. While blue rugs and silver rugs can be used to work in with Hamptons or luxurious contemporary styles.

Rugs to suit all homes and décor

Our large designer rug collection covers every interior design style. From timeless traditional rugs to natural rugs or cream rugs to suit Scandi and coastal themes, or shag rugs for a mid-century vibe. There are also transitional rugs and modern rugs in on-trend designs for your contemporary theme and multi-colour and bold designs for a boho look.

Discover the best size rug for your area

The wrong size rug can make your area feel out of proportion. Too small can look light on and make your room feel smaller. Too large and it overwhelms the space. Here are a few simple rules for how to position a rug in a few key rooms of your home so you can work out the best size.

  • Living room - A living room rug should sit beneath the sofa/s, extending past either side and should also include side tables, your coffee table, as well as any accent chairs. Make sure you leave a perimeter of your original flooring all the way around your rug.
  • Dining room - A dining area rug needs to be large enough so that when a person pulls out a chair and sits in it, the entire chair should still be on the rug. Many people buy a rug that’s a similar size to their table, however, you should be aiming for a rug that is 1.5m wider and longer than your dining table. A dining room rug should mirror the table shape. So, a rectangular rug for a rectangular table and a round rug for a round table.
  • Bedroom - Your rug should be positioned underneath your bed so that you are putting your feet onto it when you get up in the morning. This means that your rug should sit in front of or under your bedside tables and extend past the foot of your bed on both sides.

Subtle and statement-making rug designs

You have two options - blend your rug into your space with quiet warmth or opt for something that pops with colour and patterns. Here at Carpet Court, you’ll find patterns, fibres, and colours to suit any style of home, from chunky wool loops to distressed look Persian-inspired designs or elegant diagonal overtuft patterns. Just remember that if you’re choosing a statement rug, it shouldn’t be competing with another focal point in your room.

Styling your new large rug

Whether your rug is making a statement or blending quietly into its surroundings, the key is to create visual harmony with colours and a style that suit your theme. If your rug is bold, make quieter selections in the colour palette of your furniture and try to pick up hints of your rug’s colour in home décor and soft furnishings like cushions and bed linen.
